The Tempe Community Chorus has been singing great choral music in the Valley of the Sun since the fall of 1991. This eclectic bunch is made up of singers from across Maricopa County.
The Chorus offers an enjoyable and encouraging atmosphere while preparing for our highly entertaining concerts. We are dedicated to creating memorable concerts filled with a variety of wonderful music!
Tempe Community Chorus performs all over the Valley. Each season, Tempe Community Chorus performs one major concert and one to three smaller concerts. Our venues vary. We have performed at the Kerr Cultural Center in Scottsdale, the Tempe Center for the Arts, and a variety of churches in the area. In 2009, we even sang at the Insight Bowl.
There is something for everyone to enjoy, from choral classics to contemporary hits. Our musical lineup has included pop music written by Queen, historical gospel music, spirituals written during the Civil War era, Broadway show tunes such as Think of Me from Phantom of the Opera, movie theme songs like “My Heart Will Go On" from the Titanic and jazz music including Route 66. We sing a full range of styles including rock and roll and the Hallelujah Chorus by Mendelssohn. At our holiday performances we often include traditional Christmas and Hanukah music along with other holiday favorites.
In addition to presenting open concerts for our community, the Tempe Community Chorus performs at retirement communities in the area, and collects non-perishable food items to help support the Tempe Community Action Agency.
The Tempe Community Chorus singers love to sing, do our best and take pride in our performances! We value working towards improving our musical skills and have fun doing it! We are a lively group with varying experience levels, from all walks of life, who come together to create that great chorale sound. We have a 90-member chorus, and rehearse Monday evenings at the University Presbyterian Church in Tempe.
Our director, Cary Burns, doesn't just direct – he brings out the best in each singer! And our accompanist, Mary Sievert, can play almost anything! We also have a smaller vocal group within the Chorus called the Mill Street Singers, that performs more challenging pieces, or pieces that require a particular blend of voices.

Says Director, Cary Burns:
Our rehearsals are fun, yet focus on good singing and fun musical ideas. We always create a product that keeps our audiences engaged. I could not be successful without all of you, and of course, our phenomenal accompanist, Mary Sievert. Here’s to a great season."
